About Me
My name is Aly. I was born and raised in 8 countries across Africa, Asia, and Belgium. My dad is French, my mother is Jamaican and German. Growing up amidst this very socio-culturally and ethnically complex environment, I struggled with feelings of belonging, appearance, people-pleasing, approval seeking, and addiction.
My early childhood experiences and my "chameleon identity" prevented me from finding authenticity, self-confidence and self-trust in my everyday interactions. These same experiences are also the reason why I chose to work with cross-cultural kids. I wanted to become the person I needed when I was younger.
At 18, I enrolled in an Intercultural and Arts Bachelor's allowing me to understand the complexities of Interculturality. I then chose to pursue a social science Master's in International Development, with two specialisations, one in science and technology studies and one in global health. My educational background deepened my interest in social sciences and developed my desire to understand human behaviour.
During my studies, I also learned how to articulate my anger towards structural violence, societal injustice, neoliberalism, capitalism, and modern society as we know it - where better than in the lion's den itself, eh?
At the end of my Master's, I still felt something was missing. I was at a loss and deeply struggling with addiction, grief, loneliness and anger, pushing me to take my mental health and alcohol addiction more seriously. I quit alcohol, finished my Master's degree and focused on specialising myself in Identity oriented Psycho-trauma Therapy (IoPT). I followed coaching courses and deepened my knowledge of trauma and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD). I am still enrolled at present time in IoPT training courses in order to pursue my education in trauma facilitation as learning is a lifelong journey.
